The Animals of Chobe

Chobe National Park is a wildlife enthusiasts paradise. The entire park covers an area of nearly 11 000 sq km with habitats ranging from swamp and flood plain to forest.

The Chobe revine area has a profusion of wildlife especially in the dry summer months (March to November) when the herds migrate to the river. Chobe has one of the largest elephant population in Africa estimated at 37 000 (more than 5 times the elephant population of the whole of South Africa).

On the flood plains you will see the red Lechwe, and puka antelope and herd upon herd of buffalo. In the riverine thickets one often spots leopard and the rare Chobe bush buck.

Perhaps the best method of describing the diversity of game one can encounter is to give you the check list of animals I observed in three days spent at Chobe Game Lodge and Chobe Chilwero.
